Robert Montgomery is a Scottish artist / poet who is based in London and who has exhibited his works in many countries. He often uses billboards to display his poetry which capture people’s attention especially when they least expect to see artwork on the street and other unusual places.

Two of Montgomery’s close friends from art school died and this encouraged him to explore questions of religion, death and mortality. He explained that he found “ideas of ghosts and angels very comforting” and “I find the idea that somehow love can triumph over death an idea I need to keep sane.”

When his close friend Sean Flynn died, Montgomery was inspired to produce a piece of art which he found very uplifting. It was titled: THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE BECOME GHOSTS INSIDE OF YOU AND LIKE THIS YOU KEEP THEM ALIVE.

The sculpture has been exhibited in Basel, the South Bank and other places has received a massive amount of attention and praise. The sculpture recycles sunlight and illuminates itself and Montgomery views this as a metaphor of how we remember people we love.

Of course, we don’t have to remember only people who have died and keep them alive in our heads by using our thoughts and imagination. We can also carry loved ones around with us throughout the day with the result that we can grow and be energized by the encouragement they provide.
